How effective is Wegovy and how much weight can I lose?

Wegovy has been shown to work well for most people, but like any medication, results can vary. Some people may experience side effects that make it hard to continue, or they may find that the treatment doesn't work for them.

What do the clinical trials say?

In the manufacturer’s clinical trial (STEP 1), participants taking Wegovy achieved an average weight loss of 14.9%. Here's a breakdown of the results:

  • Nearly 84% of participants lost at least 5% of their starting weight.
  • Over 66% lost at least 10% of their starting weight.
  • Almost 50% lost more than 15% of their starting weight.
  • Over 30% of participants lost more than 20% of their starting weight.
Tips for Better Results

To get the best results with Wegovy, combine it with:

  • A balanced, healthy diet.
  • Regular physical activity.

This medication works best when used alongside lifestyle changes. If you have concerns about side effects or how Wegovy is working for you, speak to your healthcare provider.

By staying consistent with your treatment and making healthy changes, you can maximise your chances of achieving your weight loss goals.

What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?

Both Ozempic and Wegovy contain the same active ingredient, Semaglutide, but they are used for different purposes:

  • Ozempic is prescribed to manage type-2 diabetes.
  • Wegovy is approved specifically for weight management, including weight loss and weight maintenance.
How Are They Similar?
  • Both are once-weekly injections.
  • Both work in similar ways by mimicking a hormone that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.

If you're unsure which treatment is right for you, talk to your healthcare provider to discuss your specific needs and health goals.

What is the difference between Saxenda and Wegovy?

Wegovy and Saxenda are both prescription medications designed for weight loss, but they differ in their usage and active ingredients.

Wegovy is a once-weekly injection, while Saxenda requires daily injections. Although they work in similar ways to help with weight management, they are not identical.

The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide, whereas Saxenda contains liraglutide. Both belong to the same class of medications, known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic a natural hormone that helps regulate appetite.

These medications are produced by the same manufacturer, but your choice between them may depend on factors like how frequently you prefer to take injections or how your body responds to the treatment.

I have previously been taking Ozempic for weight loss. How do I switch to Wegovy?

If you are currently using Ozempic or have used it in the past for weight loss, the approach to switching to Wegovy depends on your current situation.

If you are currently taking Ozempic, you can switch to the same dose of Wegovy or move to the next higher dose. For example, if you are using 1.0 mg of Ozempic, you can transition to 1.7 mg of Wegovy.

If you previously used Ozempic and have had a short break in treatment (a few weeks), you can continue with Wegovy at the dose you were on before the gap.

If you previously used Ozempic at a dose of 1.0 mg and have had a longer gap in treatment, it’s best to restart Wegovy at 0.5 mg. This gradual approach lowers the risk of side effects such as nausea and is the safer option.

If you are using Ozempic to treat type-2 diabetes, you should not switch to Wegovy. Wegovy is not approved for diabetes management, so you should continue with Ozempic for your diabetes care. Always consult your healthcare provider for advice specific to your treatment needs.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take your injection on your usual day, you can take it as soon as you remember, as long as it’s within 5 days of your usual injection day. For instance, if your usual injection day is Monday, you can take the missed dose anytime up to Friday.

If more than 5 days have passed since your missed injection, skip that dose and continue with your next scheduled dose. For example, if you miss a Monday injection and it’s already Saturday, wait until the following Monday to take your next dose. Do not take two injections to make up for a missed one.

Always follow your regular schedule moving forward and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions about missed doses.
